Hi All,
I am the Intermediate Autistic Support teacher at an Elementary
School. My students ages range from 7 yrs-10yrs old. I was recently
reassigned to another room in the building,
and I am not sure if the space is appropriate for my students or fully
equipped for the program. My current room is
very spacious and includes a bathroom and a kitchen area. I have 2 students
in my class whose IEP's support them
being toilet trained. Currently, we are able to properly and easily toilet
train the students in the comfort of our own
class. Our toilet training program was specially designed by Bancroft for
each of the students. It schedules them to
be on the toilet every 15 minutes. The new room placement does not have a
bathroom, and my students will have to
share the bathroom with 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students, and also travel
to the location. This will be very hard to
conduct without an in class bathroom. The kitchen area in my current class
enables my students to eat lunch in
class, and also allows the students to engage in their life skills goals
like washing dishes, preparing short meals, and
setting a table, all goals in my students IEP's. The new room does not have
a kitchen, and now my students will have
to eat lunch in the cafeteria, and will not be able to engage in some of
their life skill goals. I worry that the busyness
in the cafeteria will affect my students sensitivity to noise and over
stimulation. My class is also a participant in the
STAR Program, and each student has their own designated area in the class
for their trials. The new room is very
confined and will cause for a lot of rearranging in the STAR program.
I truly apologize for my long message, I am just very concerned and was
wondering if there was anything that could
be done about the room reassignment. Please respond!!!!!

Have you been able to share your concerns with the school administrators and parents?  Possibly in a letter stating all of the problems with moving to the new class?
