| #1 | Hi. I'm new to this board so please be patient.
I'm a intervention specialist for children with autism. I've been teaching in self-contained autism classrooms for 5 years. This year I have four students, three of which are completely non-verbal. My life revolves around PECS and an object-symbol communication system. This means lots of objects and cards to keep track of.
I think that there are others out there who probably feel like their are drowning in 1 inch cards also. How do you keep them organized and handy? I have three paras so I need the system to be user friendly.
I've had an idea of creating a system to keep the cards in. It's kind of a tweak on some of the generic hanging organizers you can find in your local teacher store but it would be more invidividualized to our specific needs (the cards).
Would anyone be interested in something like this or do you have a better system that works? I know that sometimes I get so bogged down by what I'm doing in the classroom all day that I just don't have the time or energy to brainstorm about creative ways to do things, especially things like this.
I'd really appreciate any feedback you might have. I've thought about creating this and seeing if any of the other special educators in my school would use it. I've got some other ideas for posting picture schedules too.
Thanks. |

| #2 | Yes, keeping of all those cards can be an overwhelming job in itself. I have found that there are three types of cards- 1. daily schedule cards, 2. Once a week or occassional cards, and 3. printed spares and there maybe a use for them cards. For type 1 & 2, I keep them in a collection box [like a kitchen drawer divider box]. So I when I collect the cards at the end of the day, the cards are put in the collection box with weekly cards. When putting the schedules together all the cards are kept handy in the box. then for type 3, the cards are kept in a filing 3x5 card box [approximate size 3x5x10] with dividers. The cards are organized by category or type. The cards stay clean and organized.
I hope this helps |

In my classroom we have 3 inch binders that have card stock paper with strips of velcro to put the cards on and we have organized them by food cards/play cards/and schedule cards. This seems to help us keep all of the cards organized! Good Luck I know keeping up with PECS and schedules can be difficult. |

| #4 | I have a number of ways to organize PECS depending on student/activity: -Velcro to back of first/then clipboard...holds 12 -Velcro binder-with tabs -baseball card holders are great-clear, study pockets I put in a binder...they look like separated sheet protectors-can be purchased at Target. Hope this helps.

I use the baseball card plastic page holders also. In the front of the notebooks place a plastic pencil case. That way loose pictures can be placed in there to be organized later. Label the side of the notebooks |
